Sunscreen Issues In The News

The NY Times has an article about the controversy on labels of sunscreen. Seems that labeling is not clear or is giving people a false idea that they're safe with higher SPF's from skin dangers like cancers. In our cosmsetics trainings we've been taught that 30 SPF is the minimum to protect the skin and after that higher amounts just give a small insignificant percentages of longer time before the skin burns or experiences the beginning stages of damage, at least that's what I've come to understand.

One of our moisturizers the Skintelligence Alpha Hydroxy, has an 8 SPF in it but with today's info that's just not good enough. I don't use it on my face anyhow, mostly elbows, knees and ankles, its too rich for my oily skin but is great as a spot treatment for dry skin on my nose or chin when that sometimes shows up after I apply my foundation. And that typically happens when I haven't been doing my skincare often enough. Its also a good night cream too.

The Motives Custom Blend foundation has an additive with 30SPF as an option. Most of the blends I make now have them because I encourage it. The face is the most needed place for sun damage protection and to use a facial SPF is great....body lotions on the face are too oily and can clog pores. Many brands are creating new face sunscreens which I've seen higher prices for those. Not many women use hats for protection, myself included, and the sun's UVA's & UVB's are what do the photo damage that ages skin. I don't know how those sunbooth tanning junkies think they're gonna have supple skin as they get older. I think they look dry and leathery, besides looking totally unnatural. Have you ever noticed how their eyeballs seems to pop out of their appearance?? Ewww.

Good skincare is about removing the dead layers of skin with daily exfoliation and an occasional deeper treatment when there are issues. I love to learn the info from Dr. Denese. Her book has so much great info about how & why skin ages and can be helped with key products and how the timing of skincare regimens is also very important too......something I didn't know before. She says that night-time skincare is vital so that the skin has time to heal while the body is sleeping and rejuvenating. I noticed a major difference immediately when I did my cleansing and treatments just prior to bed. Try it!

Anyhow here's the article link: NY Times
